Rattles from dashboard or drivers door
« on: February 17, 2017, 09:05:22 PM »

Are there any diagrams, photos or instructions to show how to get access behind the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel?
I'm particularly interested if there's a way to get the drop down storage pocket off where the diagnostics port is. This would then hopefully allow me to feel up behind the dashboard and if necessary pop out the headlamp switch as well.

For a few months I've had an annoying rattle coming from either the dash to the right of the steering wheel or from the drivers door itself. The noise sounds metalic almost like a wire or similar scraping on something. I can't identify exactly where it's coming from but sometimes it does sound like something is sliding along the door pocket even though it's empty.

I've tried pushing and banging on every part of the door card and dashboard but I'm unable to hear where it's coming from and it's impossible to locate while driving along.

I found a couple of guides and attempted to take the door card off but couldn't get the metal insert out of the inner door handle for fear of damaging the trim and therefore couldn't get to the screws/bolts behind it. Is there a trick to doing this without causing damage as the plastic is very soft and easily marked?

After a lot of wiggling and banging I've finally found that the rattle I've had for a few months is coming from the top right area of the dashboard and not the door.
If I whack the small speaker just above the air vent I can hear the rattle exactly as I do when driving. It sounds kind of metalic almost like a spring although I'm not sure if it's the speaker itself, the wires attached to it or something underneath.

Does anyone know how to get the small speaker above the air vent out?
I've tried levering it out with a screw driver but it won't budge and I don't want to damage it or the dash.

Also is there a way to get the plastic trim out between the top edge of the dashboard and the A pillar as I might be able to get access that way?

Thanks for any suggestions

this any good?

Thanks for the info.

I eventually found where the noise was coming from and my description of a metalic kind of spring noise was bang on. There was an inch long spring loose inside the air vent which directs air onto the drivers door window.
It couldn't be seen through the vent and I only  found it after removing the trim between the side of the dashboard and the door. When I tapped the plastic ducting I could hear something inside. I couldn't get the front of the vent off so used a vacuum cleaner to suck the spring against the inside of the vent and was then able to wiggle it through the vent with long nose pliers.
I've no idea how the spring got there but at least it's sorted.
If anyone is interested you can get access behind the right side of the dashboard by removing the drop down pocket where the diagnostics port is. The pocket hinges at the bottom and I had to insert a screw driver each side at the hinge and kind of wiggle it out. It takes a lot of force.
Once off you can reach up and remove the headlight switch by squeezing the clips top and bottom.

While I had the trim off I've cable tied and taped a few sets of wires because they looked like they may also move about and possibly make noise.
