On an '06 model it should still have a bulb I think- a large capless type, Ford part no 4651571. I can't speak as to how to remove the lamp unit however as I've never done it, although a few other Fords I've worked on required releasing a couple of sprung metal lugs accessed from the rear of the lamp unit from within the tailgate.
Always learning..... Often by mistakes!

Thanks very much I thought it was a strip of LEDs and was going to cost a lot of money ;)

I've changed mine (2007 Mk3 Galaxy, petrol, 2.0 litre). The easiest way I found was to remove the trim on the inside, so open boot, then remove the plastic trim (grab hold, and pull). Then using wooden chopstick, I push and prod on the two metal spring clips, and then the unit pops out - with it's wire still attached to the bulb.
It is a standard bulb on mine, and not LED, so easy to replace, and cheap as chips...If I find my photos, I'll update later...

Great pics. Thanks for this.

Does anyone know how the wiring is run through the tailgate into the body, as mine occasionally flashed up with STOP LIGHT FAIL and the high level light stops working. Got out and checked and the mains ones work when this error flashes up Then an hour or 2 late it starts again, so I an presuming a possible rubbing / shorting wire somewhere.

Obviously there's the grey connector on the lamp end but was wondering how long that lead is and is there another end in the body to connect together into a main loom?

Any known failure points on these at all? I read somewhere about a recall for a ceramic loom replacement - no idea what that is referring too?

Chris

Hi Chris, A mate of mine had a same problem with the error flashing on the dash and found that one of the thin wires on the outside of the bulb wasn't making a good connection and when he went over a bump it showed him an error message. I have changed all my car bulbs to LED that is all interior( footwell, glovebox, all courtesy and map) exterior( puddle lights, indicators, front fog, side lights, 8 rear tail lights, stop n tail) the only one I have a problem with for LED is the high level brake. I have tried about 4 different types of canbus error free bulbs but still no joy so I kept it to the standard one. I have also changed the dip and full beam to 100w night breakers and they make hell of a difference with brightness. Andy
