Title: Removal of petrol tank, petrol pump
Post by: GethThomas on August 23, 2015, 04:29:03 PM
Had a bad petrol leak, seemed to be coming from my petrol tank area, car had been running fine before hand. I have previously (2 months ago) replaced the fuel pump, so I had an idea what to do - took photos this time.  Have put notes and photos in attached PDF...

Good job! Shame that (with respect to the Mk3 Galaxy) Ford didn't follow VW's lead- in the Mk2 design a handy little access flap was installed in the floorpan which allows you to access/remove the in tank pump without dropping the tank.

my mk3 Galaxy 2.0 litre petrol zetec (2007) has broken down again, with what I think is a fuel starvation issue. Engine turns over, but won't fire, tank is 3/4 full of unleaded (and I've checked the receipts). Fuse 22 (15A) seems ok, but I've replaced it anyway.  The car was running fine on a busy Saturday night (being used as a private hire taxi), and then wouldn't re-start. No smell of petrol, no sound at all when turning key to position 2 (expecting to hear whirring/humming noise from petrol tank area - in between two back wheels).

Can someone help with location of relays? Is there a petrol pump relay, and a horn relay - are they identical - can I swap them to test the relay (horn works OK). Not sure where to start looking...

Job done - I pumped out the 40 of petrol that I'd only just put in the tank, and dropped the tank to access the pump.  What I found was like some form of crystallized corrosion between the two fat pins on the pump connector block - see pictures.  I attacked this with scissors - and hey presto - all fixed and working again.  Beats paying the garage...

Post 2007 Mondeos don't have a lift pump in the tank.  After a fuel filter change, the filter and lines need to be filled by suction for them to start.  Galaxys may be the same.  Unless you have heard a pump working previously, I would not assume that one is there.
