If there are no visible leaks on ground I would say either a breather pipe issue or slight leak but it’s dripping on exhaust.

Loose oil filter can cause it on some Fords, just depends on the position.

Having taken car to garage today no visible signs of oil leak or loose pipes on back of engine unless it's dropping on to top of manifold

Strange there is no trace of oil leak but you get burning smell. Only thing I can think is you have a slight leak that is hitting manifold or the car is going through DPF regen? I know my cars both smell of burning and extremely hot if regenerating.

That won’t be helping get it dropped down and monitor because that can be a sign of failed regenerations if it wasn’t over filled.

It will do it automatically if certain conditions are met. Needs to be at operating temp and engine rpm 2500 or above.
Best bet take on motorway and keep in lower gear so revs are 2500-3000 for half hour to keep exhaust temp up.

You can force a regen if you have the diag software
