Title: Seat Alhambra powered tailgate not closing under power
Post by: Ron Nattrass on March 11, 2017, 04:13:19 PM
The powered tailgate on my 12/2010 Alhambra goes up under power but has to be pushed down.  My dealer thought it was a problem with the powered struts but replacing them has not cured it.  I'm wondering if there's a separate sensor somewhere that is stopping the tailgate from closing - it starts to go down on the button then stops as if it had hit an obstruction.  Any ideas welcomed - I'm now thinking of replacing the powered struts with ordinary gas struts and doing away with the powered opening and closing, convenient though it is to have that!

Hi Ron, there is a setup procedure for the tailgate

Ignition on then open the tailgate electrically until it stops. Pull it down manually a fraction and hold in this position. Press and hold the close button on the tailgate itself for a few seconds until the indicator lights flash.

Now see if it will close on its own.

I did try that - with the original struts and the replacements - and the tailgate still won't go down under power.  It starts to move down then stops and alarms as if it had detected an obstruction, even though there isn't one.  The same thing happens regardless of which switch I use, the one on the dash, on either of the ones on the tailgate or the key fob.  Given that exactly the same thing happens with the old struts and the replacements, I'm thinking that this may not be strut related as my dealer suggested.  That why I'm wondering if there's a separate sensor somewhere that's causing the problem.

Yes there is, the struts literally just open and close it with no sensors. The pinch protection is built into the tailgate:

Am just guessing but maybe dodgy wiring in tailgate gaitor or worst case faulty controller.

Or dodgy pinch guard, have you had a vcds scan done to see if any errors and also measure blocks to see what happens when tailgate plays up?

Many thanks.  I'll take a look at that.

Allegedly, my dealer scanned the car when diagnosing the problem originally, during its last service but I have to confess that I'm less than convinced!
